Press Release - World’s Solar Experts Convene in Seattle for 37th IEEE PVSC

World’s Solar Experts Convene in Seattle for 37th IEEE PVSC
SunPower President Emeritus to deliver keynote at event’s 50th anniversary

SEATTLE – June 15, 2011 – The Organizing Committee of the  HYPERLINK "http://www.ieee-pvsc.org/PVSC37/" 37th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC), the solar industry’s longest running global gathering of leading PV scientists and engineers, today announced its final program for the June 19-24 event taking place at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011, the IEEE PVSC is widely respected as the first major event to bring together international photovoltaics experts to discuss PV research and technology. This year’s conference drew more than 1,200 technical abstract submissions from across the globe—a new record for the conference.

Presentations will address the latest advancements in solar technologies across 10 technical areas, including crystalline silicon technologies, organic PV, space technologies, and many more.

The PVSC opens on Sunday, June 19 with  HYPERLINK "http://www.ieee-pvsc.org/PVSC37/solar-day.html" Solar Day, where community members can hear from industry experts about the benefits of solar energy and meet with local system installers to learn more about “going solar.” Solar Day also features the PVSC’s High School Solar Design Competition, now in its 28th year. Students from area high schools will display their own solar projects, with awards presented to the top submissions. Admission to Solar Day is free to the public.

The  HYPERLINK "http://www.ieee-pvsc.org/PVSC37/technical-program.html" technical conference begins on Monday, June 20, with a keynote address from Dr. Richard Swanson, industry veteran and President Emeritus of SunPower Corporation. Monday’s program also features the presentation of the prestigious  HYPERLINK "http://www.ieee-pvsc.org/PVSC37/cherry-award.html" William R. Cherry Award, bestowed upon a member of the PV community who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the advancement of the industry. The 2011 Cherry Award recipient is Dr. Jerry M. Olson, a Principal Scientist for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) who has contributed to numerous PV inventions over more than three decades.

Additionally, the PVSC’s 60,000 square-foot exhibition hall will showcase exhibitors from around the world, as well as more than 740 poster presentations.

“The 37th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference promises to be our biggest event yet, featuring high-caliber presenters, exhibitors and attendees from the world’s leading research-focused universities, laboratories and corporations,” said David Wilt, Conference Chair for the 37th IEEE PV Specialists Conference. “We’ve already set conference records with an overwhelming number of abstract submissions, and our organizing committees have worked tirelessly to further exceed expectations for this year’s conference. Our 50th anniversary will be an event to remember, and we are excited to share the weeklong celebration with our peers and the greater Seattle community.”
